Russian and East European StudiesStudents may seek Penn credit for coursework taken at other institutions, whether study abroad, transfer credit, or credit away, through the External Course Approval Tool (XCAT). In addition to the information on this page, please refer to Penn's general policies concerning external credit.
Each request in XCAT is reviewed by the Undergraduate Chair or the Language Program Director, who assesses the information provided to determine whether a course's structure, materials, assignments, contact hours, and methods of assessment make it commensurate with similar offerings at Penn. The reviewer's determination is final.
When equivalent credit in REES is approved for coursework completed at other institutions, it appears on the transcript as one of the courses listed below. Students may receive multiple credits for courses that receive the same number.
REES does not award credit for fully asynchronous courses. The course numbers below are not directly equivalent to specific courses taught at Penn, which means equivalent credit in REES cannot be used to satisfy the College's Sector Requirement.
In consultation with the Undergraduate Chair, students can use equivalent credit to fulfill specific major and minor requirements in REES.
