Penn Language Requirement/Placement Test assesses your ability to understand and communicate in a language, as well as your understanding of the basic structure of this language (sentence structure, basic declension and conjugation patterns) and consists of a reading, a grammar and vocabulary, an essay and a speaking/listening section.
Please note that the placement test for the Penn Language Requirement must be taken in person and may not be retaken.
REGISTRATION
Students who need to schedule a test to register for a Russian language class in Fall ’26 should contact Dr. Nazyrova at nazyrova@sas.upenn.edu. You will be invited to the Placement Test Canvas site to complete the Language Background Questionnaire.
All other students: the information about placement test registration will appear on this page in June '26. The next placement test will take place during New Student Orientation in August '26.

Students can view exam results in “View my Student Profile” on PATH@Penn under the “Tests” tab on the lefthand menu.
INTERPRETING TEST RESULTS
0 – register for RUSS 0101 or RUSS 0201
400 – register for RUSS 0200 or RUSS 0401
450 – register for RUSS 0300; meets Wharton and Nursing Language Requirement
500 – register for RUSS 0400
650 – register for RUSS 1100 or above (please contact nazyrova@sas.upenn.edu if you have questions about choosing a course); meets College Language Requirement
