Olga Tokarczuk

Olga Nawoja Tokarczuk is a Polish writer and poet. Winner of the Man Booker International Prize (2018) and the Nobel Prize in Literature (2018, awarded in 2019). Tokarczuk was born in Sulechów. One of her grandmothers was Ukrainian. Tokarczuk graduated from the Psychology Department of the University of Warsaw, then worked as a psychotherapist in Wałbrzych. She currently lives in Wrocław. She is a member of the Green Party and the editorial board of the left-liberal magazine "Political Criticism". She debuted in 1979 with a collection of poems under the pseudonym "Natasha Borodin". In 1993, her first novel "The Path of the Book People" was published. In October 2007, her novel "Flights" was published, which she worked on for three years. According to Olga's recollections, she made most of the notes while traveling. The novel "Flights" brought her the most prestigious literary award in the country "Nike" (2008). Tokarczuk is also a master of short prose. Critics include Olga Tokarczuk among the representatives of the so-called "young prose of the 1990s". Her works have been translated into many languages. In May 2018, Olga Tokarczuk was awarded the International Booker Prize - for the novel "Flights". Tokarczuk became the first Polish writer to receive this award.
